Respiratory System Group 1

What is the respiratory system?     Your respiratory system is made up of the organs in your body that help you to breathe. Remember, that Respiration = Breathing. The goal of breathing is to deliver oxygen to the body and to take away carbon dioxide.

PARTS OF THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
    - lungs
    -nose
    -windpipe
    -air sacs

LUNGS

The lungs are the main organs of the respiratory system. In the lungs oxygen is taken into the body and carbon dioxide is breathed out. The red blood cells are responsible for picking up the oxygen in the lungs and carrying the oxygen to all the body cells that need it. The red blood cells drop off the oxygen to the body cells, then pick up the carbon dioxide which is a waste gas product produced by our cells. The red blood cells transport the carbon dioxide back to the lungs and we breathe it out when we exhale.
   AIR SACS

The air sacs know as alveoli , are surrounded by many tiny blood vessels, called capillaries.

An alveolus  is an anatomical structure that has the form of a hollow cavity.[1] Found in the lung , the pulmonary alveoli are the terminal ends of the respiratory tree, which outcrop from either alveolar sacs or alveolar ducts, which are both sites of gas exchange with the blood as well.[2] Alveoli are particular to mammalian lungs. Different structures are involved in gas exchange in other vertebrates.[3] The alveolar membrane is the gas-exchange surface. Carbon dioxide rich blood is pumped from the rest of the body into the alveolar blood vessels where it through diffusion releases its carbon dioxide and absorbs oxygen.

NOSE

A nose is a structure on the face that is part of the respiratory system. It contains the nasal cavity and nose hairs. The nasal cavity is a tube to the windpipe. The nose hairs trap dust and dirt so they do not enter the lungs and make us choke.

WINDPIPE(TRACHEA-TRAY-kee-uh)

The trachea  is sometimes called the windpipe. The trachea filters the air we breathe and branches into the bronchi.

 INHALED AIR AND EXHALED AIR

   Inhaled air and exhaled air
contain different levels of
gases. Inhaled air is rich
in oxygen. There is less
oxygen and more carbon
dioxide in exhaled air
because oxygen is used
up by the body and carbon
dioxide is produced.
Water vapour is also
exhaled from the lungs.
